Singapore may not be culturally rich, but one aspect that poses a problem for most foreigners is the area of language and dialects. Most glaringly today is the increasing presence of dialects and mandarin pieces in English or Singlish speeches. Add Hanyu Pinyin, and the confusion gets worse. Maids come from surrounding countries, and most of them are not proficient in English, even though they may claim to pass a test before coming to Singapore.
